Stray dogs are a common sight in Athens with many living in small packs in the city's various squares or near tourist spots such as the Acropolis. Most are monitored and tagged by the local authorities receiving vaccinations and veterinary attention when needed. The streets - which the dogs have learnt to navigate around, negotiating busy road junctions and pedestrian crossings - also provide in the main, the food, water and shelter they need whilst various charities and individuals also are involved in their welfare. The reason for their large numbers is varied but theories have included the closure of the traditional city dog pound and the fact that keeping dogs as pets is a relatively recent phenomena in Greece and some owners do not realise the commitment involved and release the dogs as strays. In vista dei Mondiali di Calcio del 2026, che Rabat vorrebbe ospitare, sembra sia in atto un vero e proprio massacro di cani randagi in Marocco. Tutto solo per rendere più “pulito” il Paese, ed in particolar modo le zone turistiche di Agadir. La strage di animali randagi avrebbe avuto inizio la notte del 5 Aprile, quando gli abitanti di Tamarghat, Taghazaout e Taourirt (nella provincia di Agadir) si sono svegliati a causa di una serie di spari uditi dalla strada.

I testimoni fanno sapere che a sparare erano proprio i gendarmi, che avrebbero dichiarato di essere stati autorizzati ad uccidere gli animali randagi. Una manovra, quella attuata in Marocco, che sembra sia già stata messa in atto in passato, e che non ha potuto non destare polemiche da parte dei cittadini, i quali erano abituati a convivere con i cani randagi. In breve tempo sono già state lanciate molte petizioni on line, e sono state raccolte oltre 20 mila firme, per chiedere di porre fine a questo terribile massacro.
La motivazione di questa strage di randagi sarebbe teoricamente legata alla sicurezza pubblica (e non quindi alla visita del comitato Fifa in programma per il 19 aprile). Qualunque sia la ragione di un simile comportamento, il risultato è che a Taghazout da lunedì non c’è più nessun cane randagio.

Pagando ragazzini per sapere dove si nascondevano i cani ne hanno poi uccisi a decine fucilandoli o acciuffandoli con delle reti e trasportandoli per ucciderli da un’altra parte.
